Attractions

Come enjoy the merriment and conviviality of our humble inn.

Take advantage of the Pelican Inn’s close proximity to Muir Woods, Muir Beach, and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, with its miles of hiking and biking trails.

Top Ten Attractions

  1. No. 1

    MUIR BEACH

Muir Beach is a beautiful Northern California beach, sequestered in a cove and a short walk or hike from us.

  2. No. 2

    Muir Woods

Named after naturalist John Muir, the woods are home to a rare virgin stand of ancient redwoods — the world’s oldest living things — and are just a few minutes drive from us.

  3. No. 3

    MT. TAMALPAIS

The Pelican rests at the foot of Mt. Tamalpais, the Bay Area’s tallest mountain. Take a drive to the very top, East Peak, and enjoy a one-quarter mile hike around the peak. On the way there stop at at our sister inn, Mountain Home Inn, the last building before total wilderness on Panoramic Highway — if it’s a nice day you can enjoy lunch on its deck overlooking San Francisco Bay.

  4. No. 4

    HIKING

Hiking trails next to our inn include the California Costal Trail and the new Dias trail.

  5. No. 5

    MUIR BEACH OVERLOOK

Enjoy views of Pacific ocean-side cliffs and on clear days you can see San Francisco. During the first two weeks of both January and March you can also watch whales migrating to and from their breeding grounds in Baja California. The Overlook is located north of the Inn, at top of hill on Hwy. 1.

  1. No. 6

    GREEN GULCH ZEN CENTER

You can take a short hike into Green Gulch Zen Center, our next-door neighbor, and enjoy its meditation garden.

  2. No. 7

    STINSON BEACH

A fifteen minute drive north, Stinson Beach features a long crescent beach and tiny surf side village. A few miles further up the road is the unmarked road to Bolinas, famously lost in time as a 60’s hold-over.

  3. No. 8

    POINT REYES

About an hour north on Hwy. 1 is Point Reyes. Here you can find oyster farms, cheese-makers and the beautiful Point Reyes National Seashore.

  4. No. 9

    BAY VILLAGES

All of the above attractions are found on the quiet rural “West Marin”. 15 minutes away over-the-hill in “East Marin” are the SF Bay villages of Sausalito, Tiburon and the woodsy village of Mill Valley. These bustling small villages are filled with tourists, locals, boutiques, restaurants and art galleries.

  5. No. 10

    DAY TRIPS

The Inn is an ideal central location for exploring the region’s best attractions. You can spend days exploring the above but if you want even more, the Golden Gate Bridge is only 20 minutes away to the south and the Sonoma/Napa Wine Country begins about an hour’s drive to the north on Hwy. 101.

Muir Beach

Muir Beach has a scenic cove, beach, tidal lagoon and creek. Its Redwood Creek is home to numerous shorebirds, salmon, trout and plant rushes.

The beach is located just a short walk from us at the end of our road or you can take the new .7 mile-long trail found opposite us.

Muir Woods

“It took more than 3,000 years to make some of the trees in these western woods — trees that are still standing in perfect strength and beauty, waving and singing…”

~John Muir

The majestic redwoods of the Muir Woods National Monument park are just a few minutes drive from us.

Hiking

Two trailheads are adjacent to us, the Dias and the California Coastal Trail.

When completed, the California Coastal Trail will go from Mexico to Oregon. Today 50% of the 1,200 mile California coast and nearby area is served by it and new sections are continually being added. The trailhead is located across Pacific Way from us and takes you to Muir Beach among other places.

The newly created Dias Trail, serving hikers, mountain bikers and horse-riders, is located across Hwy. 1 from us.
